It’s history.  Funny how you think and plan and talk about an event for so long and suddenly, it’s over.  Darius and Ro had a beautiful wedding.  Vibrant colors.  Gorgeous music.  And superb food.

And I had an incredible gift from God.  After all the “should I or shouldn’t I” mental debates, I decided to try it.   After a week with some good moments and some really rough moments, I was hoping I was prepared for the worst.  We left at 4 in the morning since that’s the most pain-free part of my day.  And would you believe, I travelled in relative comfort for the first seven hours.  I could not believe it.  All I could say was, “this is God.”  It was just such a gift to be able to be there.  Yesterday, well, that wasn’t so great.  Especially not the last half of it.  But at least we were coming home.

Adam was an incredible traveller both ways.  Every time we go somewhere, I can’t believe how different it is to travel with a four year old as opposed to a baby.  He loves to watch the semis and listens to his Bible story CD’s over and over.  We stayed with John and Karen Hostetler.  I think they re-defined the word hospitality.  From the moment we stepped in the door dripping wet they were so gracious and accomodating.  “Our house is your house while you’re here” they kept saying and it was so obvious they meant it.  And then there were all the special things that went so far beyond what anyone would have to do.  Karen had a child’s size tent just right for Adam to sleep in.  And best of all, they had a little toy airplane, just the same size as the one Dan and Frieda have that he always remembers and won’t put down.  He played and played with it and Karen said it was fine for him to take it along to the wedding.  I was afraid we’d lose it; but I shouldn’t have worried.  He could barely lay it down for the ceremony and begged for it as soon as we were done for the reception.  Family pictures were supposedly at 10:30; but didn’t happen til 10 til 12 and what a lifesaver that airplane was.

That night I got Adam ready for bed and sent him out to tell John and Karen goodnight and to thank them for letting us stay there.  When he went out, Karen gave him a brand new little airplane just the same size as theirs for him to keep.  I told him we’d open it in the car the next morning and he wanted to hold the box in bed.  We got in the car at 10 after 5 the next morning and he squinted around, “Mommy, can I have that airplane now.”  And for the next eight hours he barely put it down long enough to eat.  I didn’t even read one story the entire trip home.  I’d say he likes it!

And now, a “few” pictures for those of you who wanted to be there and couldn’t..

I was thinking about you a lot this weekend and I’m glad there were definite bright moments for you!  It does look like a beautiful wedding.  The little boys all dressed up are adorable!  Did they actually leave the roses alone??

Aw, you’ve made me cry! I wanted so badly to be at that wedding, and I was handling it fine until I saw the pictures. But I’m glad you posted them, all the same. And I’m so glad you were able to go, and that it went so well for you. Missing a sibling’s wedding (or a sibling-in-law!) would be tough.

Lovely pictures…  Glad you got to go. We just missed another wedding which was at our church in England… it’s so hard to miss weddings, yet it seems it ALWAYS happens to us!

Doesn’t it make you feel as if you accomplised something HUGE by going? Love the story of Adam and the airplane. I always find it amusing how little it can take to keep a small boy happy. Last summer when L was born, some folks thoughtfully gave something small for Z with her baby gifts. Once it was a small car that went to bed with him the first night! And some books he got then…just last evening those went along for bedtime browsing.

Looking forward to hearing about your next ‘big event’ coming up!

Thanks soooo much for posting pics! I really wanted to be at their wedding so it’s nice to have a little peek at how it went. Sounds like my parents loved having you there too! Mom said when they got home from church the house was just two quiet and only a few lonely toys were laying on the floor…  too many miles between them and their grand-babies and grown up children.  Thanks for making their weekend special!

Hey Michelle! I was hoping you’d be able to go to the wedding. I don’t know her (the  bride) at all and barely him (Darius) but I still enjoyed the pictures! Wow, beautiful! Adam looked like a right little charmer! I can’t wait to meet him now that he’s talking. I get the biggest kick out of all the “Adamisms”! Carolyn
