Wow, that is fascinating! I was hoping the article would tell more, though, about how the researchers discovered this fact. I can’t see Amish lining up to see if they have the gene or not!
@maryjunemiller – OMW, you really are famous! First modelling for a billboard advertisement and now part of a new research that may save thousands of lives! Um, can you autograph something for me? 😉
But do tell more, who thought to check the Amish? My first guess was an ex-Amish person pursuing a degree in Science did it for a research project and it turned into something bigger; but I could be way off base.
@ewaldro – see Mary June’s comments below yours for more fascination!
“grin” – Never thought about being famous for it! ( ; I’m not positive how they got started with this “Fisher” family. But I know this was the 2nd heart study they did on them. With the first one, they realized that a majority of this family is not affected by Aspirin. And this triggered some curiosity. This second study was more extensive and they were researching a couple different things. I wish I would have asked more questions when I was there, or that someone like you would have been with me to ask them.
I don’t think it was anybody ‘ex-Amish’ who started it. But I could be wrong. I don’t know if you have heard of Dr. Morton, from our area? He is a research doctor who has done amazing studies and found cures for genetic diseases that the Amish in this area carry. Like the “glutaric aciduria”. Google his name – he is quite an amazing man! But the Amish have come to really love/ trust him and seriously, he could almost ask them to do anything for him and they would. It’s a good thing that he is a good man! ( : I don’t think he had anything to do with this study, though, but I did hear his name come up in the clinic and I think he may have helped the Amish get over their fear of some of these researches.
The reason I was able to be a part is because I am from this “Fisher family”. Patrick had wanted to be a part too, but couldn’t be on this study. They will be doing more studies and will give us the chance to be a part if we would like. I love this kind of thing – it always did fascinate me. And with my youngest brother being diagnosed with MD just recently – we are just getting ready to do genetic testing for that now, since he is the second brother in my family with it.

….And I got to be part of the study!! YIPPEE!! Was fun and even got paid a nice little sum for taking Plavix for 2 weeks. Mj
IN response to the first comment – yes, the Amish actually quite willingly did the study. ( : Seriously. Mj

Hope you have a good day – MJ
I am really sad that I am blocked out. I love reading about genetic findings and sounds like this would be very interesting…
@damys – Oh, that’s too bad. Want me to try to copy and paste it into a message for you?
I actually listened to a video clip on Fox News about it… thanks for the offer:)
