Today for the first time Adam walked into the library all by himself. Liam had just fallen asleep and not wanting to wake him, I asked Adam if he wanted to try doing it solo. Much to my surprise, he thought for two seconds and said, “yes.”
I coached him through the, “I’d like to return this book, please,” and, “could you help me find, Little Town on the Prairie.” Then I handed over the keys with my library card attached.
“Are you sure you want to do this.”
“Oh, yes,” he said, scrambling out the door.
When the double doors of the library swallowed him, he looked so tiny. I watched for the top of his head through the window but couldn’t find it right away. Then I saw him walking back to the children’s section and returning with a librarian.
It was only a minute or two until he reappeared beaming and giving me a huge thumbs up as soon as he saw me. I was beaming, too; but there were two teeny weeny tears in my eyes, too. Because I was just so proud of him.
Sometimes we seem to grow about six feet in that many minutes.

I felt the teeny weeny tears in my own eyes, and I don’t even know Adam, but I AM a mom.
Oh my! Me too!
i have tears too. i don’t know him either…..but i’m a mom too (or trying to be). Anyways, u must be an awesome mom – and what a wonderful boy u have!
Awww…..they grow up SO fast!!
I sat here smiling and feeling so very proud of him myself!
aww…so precious. and so easy to relate to…these days of watching our sons grow up are so very bittersweet..
yep, a mom moment, to be sure!
We give them roots..so they can grow wings! Three cheers for Adam…and his Mommy too.
Way to go, Adam! And Mommy! I like!
awww
Oh yes, it’s deep water but watching them start on their own is rewarding/
Wow! 🙂 They just grow up way too fast, don’t they?!
Somehow, (even tho’ i never met him) i can picture Adam walking into the library. 🙂
Independance is a slow process in the lives of our children…Thank God! Good for you for letting him do that himself. I’m sure he was so proud of himself. Great Mommy moment, for sure.
I want to have been the librarian.
i totally felt it when he gave you the huge thumbs up sign 🙂 someday i want to meet him.
Jacqui went into Marketplace (like Krogers) for the first time when she was 8 and got a cake mix and seriously, you would have thought she climbed Mt. Everest- she was that proud of herself!!
It takes a brave boy & a TRUSTING Mom to take that step!!! Way to go Adam.:)
Im inspired with the exceptional and instructive contents that you provide in such short timing.that site
