Adam spent the weekend at my mom’s house. He’s been wanting to help make jam for a long time and finally we had a plan in place.

Mom has been making jam to sell since I was 17. It started in the kitchen; but quickly demanded a space of it’s own so it got moved to the basement where it quickly took over half the space. At any given moment, there are probably a thousand jars of jam in her basement ready to head out the door to make many people in Virginia happy. If you live anywhere in central Virginia, look for jams by “The Family Fruit Basket.” And if you don’t live there, well, I can get you connected. There are even people who call and say, “you know, I’m just standing here at my kitchen sink eating it straight out of the jar.” It’s that good.

Adam likes to help label and mostly I suspect he wonders around feeling important and talking non-stop. Apparently he did listen this time instead of just talking because he informed me that Dorcas is a picky eater and Geneva eats very slowly. “Or wait,” he said, “maybe it’s Dorcas that is slow and Geneva is picky. I can’t remember anymore.” Later he said he had them all write their names and their ages on his paper. “It’s my very important papers, Mommy.”

I couldn’t believe how much I missed him. Even the talking. In fact, very much the talking. It was dreadfully quiet here. Today on the way to town he said, “Mommy, what does scuffling mean?”

I tried to demonstrate on the dash with my hand the difference between steps and scuffling.

Adam: “Mouses scuffle.”
Me: “You mean mice?”
Adam: “Yes, mice scuffle.” short pause “Mice stink when they’ve been dead a long time.”
Me: “Yes they do. Who told you that?”
Adam: “Oh, I just thought it up in my brain. See, I knew that animals stink after they are dead so I just thought in my brain, ok, so mice, if they’re dead, stink.”

And then as we were driving home he sighed and said he wished he could make jam again. And only a moment later he said, “I wish Pooh were here.”
David: “Pooh? Are you feeling lonely?”
Adam: “No, I’m just being like Piglet. ‘entirely surrounded by water’.”

And if only I could remember the twenty-one great chuckles inbetween.

Oh, Adam. I’m so glad you’re home!

: ) I should have sent another very important paper listing all the things he did.  He dated jars, with gloves turned on caps, cleaned and packed jam, and wheeled it to the pallet one case at a time on the two-wheeled cart.  If he was tired Monday night it was because he put himself into everything he did.  Did he tell you we had subs because of Gen’s birthday?  He ordered a Spicy Italian (one of my favorites).

Are you keeping track of everything that child has said or done? =)  He just makes me laugh.  You  could write a book, I think, on things he’s said.    I love what he said about piglet. =)

What I thought when I read this was “Awww…this is such a good reminder for me to enjoy the moments while they last!”  My kids are 7, 4, and 2, but already I am finding myself feeling like to I need to slow down time because they are growing up so fast. I LOVE, LOVE the stage they are in and all of the interesting thoughts and questions and cute things they say!  Keep the stories coming…I find them quite interesting and funny!

….actually, I was probably the picky one. πŸ™‚ And one thing I will never forget that he said. He was going around to each of us, getting our “important information.” When he had my first name, he then asked for my last name. I asked him, “Shall I write my middle name too?” Adam: “Yes, I would prefer that, please.” …said so matter of factly, innocence written all over his face! I noticed he used that word, prefer, alot all day. πŸ™‚ He’s so delightful and mannerly! I missed him very much the next day, and yes, it was quiet. πŸ˜‰ You’ve taught him well! πŸ™‚
