Tomorrow, July 12th, is Christy’s birthday.  And now that she is in SC you would think I would follow my urge and drive down there tomorrow.  I feel just a bit pouty about having to be so responsible for the next few weeks.  There are a few quirks to growing up, or at least older.  Things like being put on the food committee for two years.  Which really isn’t too bad a job all in all.  Or at least in wasn’t.  Until it interfered with my ability to plan a spur of the moment surprise trip to SC.    We’re hosting the youth fellowship meetings in two weeks and it’s tying ropes around my head and body.  I feel a little like I did getting ready for our wedding.  You know, semi-permanently attached to an external brain in the form of a ring-binder.  And a little like I did the summer I did two courses of Biology and one of English to jump start my college experience.  You know, eat, breathe, sleep food committee thoughts.  Now if I could just finagle another honeymoon out of this … or a graduation…..

How rare are we? Meeting up with another Mennonite woman (gasp!) who is a college graduate is a rare event, much less one who is a stay-at-home mom. I get the “why did you go to college if you’re not using it” line all the time. Mennonite women think the going to college part was a waste, and the non-Mennonite women think the stay-at-home mom part is a waste. How about going to SC a little later, say maybe in September for the women’s seminar–hint, hint. Actually, I had planned on going, but now I’m working through a glitch in those plans. We’ll see. Would be lovely to meet you in person.

Ah, spur-of-the-moment trips….I used to love doing stuff like that….  I fear I’ve become a far too practical stick-in-the-mud the last few years.  *sigh*  Sorry you can’t go.  Have fun w/ the food committee stuff—I’m so glad that it’s you & not me! *shudders*  ~Jo

Hey, too bad you can’t go to SC – sounds like a wonderful idea. Our church actually has a guideline that families with young children aren’t eligible for the food committee unless they also have older children to help. Of course, since most of our families are middle-aged or older, it works pretty well here – your church might be different. I’ve wondered if guidelines like that are necessary – it kinda puts people in a box. And I know of young moms (like you) who are very organized and would do well on the food committee. But I must say it’s a relief to know we’re not eligible for now. Anyhow, hope all goes well! I got a laugh out of your last sentence.
