Yesterday I went to Home Depot to choose and order a vanity top for the main bath upstairs. Finally we’re getting to the fun parts of building! I can hardly wait to go shopping for light fixtures, door knobs, and carpet. But why is it that when you walk in to look at a display of, well, anything, the most attractive is also always the most expensive? And who would ever have dreamed I would be bombarded by half a dozen decisions simply to order a vanity. Color and material … simple enough. But no, after the “simple enough” (which turned out to be not so simple and included a “need some support honey” phone call to my husband) decision was made and I smilingly announced I was ready to order, the questions came tumbling at me like a garden hose turned on jet stream. Would you like a standard dripless edge, or a raised edge or would you like to upgrade to one of these three beveled edges. Help us all. I’ve never even noticed different sorts of edges on vanities. Which side do you want the sink? (At least that one was easy. sigh.) Now how far exactly would you like the bowl from the side. “Um, about this much” I said spreading my fingers to what I suspected would be four inches. (Good thing my craftsman, trim carpenter, perfectionist husband didn’t see that one … he would have howled! It was probably, 3 and 15/16th for all I know. I forgot all about the 3 foot tape measure I carry in my purse for occasions like this. Bummer. I could have at least looked professional). “Enough to put the soap on that side,” with head nods and as much confidence as I could muster. Barely had I gotten that out when she says, “Would you like the bowl straight or recessed?” Whatever does that mean? Pictures got worse b/c then there were even more options. Think practically I muttered to myself. “Side splash on both sides?” whew. at least that one was simple. “Ship here for no charge or to your house for $70?” I finally emerged with a receipt in hand feeling gleefully accomplished. And that night when David Lee sat down at his desk I casually waved it under his nose and said, “oh and here’s the receipt for the vanity top.”
