And behold, Michelle’s kitchen was void and without form.  Well, more like full and completely without order.  And the time was 2:07 pm.  And in six hours twenty young men and women would arrive at her house looking for a snack.  It reminded me a lot of when we girls were pre-teens (and older, blush) and Mom would say, “Girls!  In less then an hour they’re going to be here and look at what it looks like in here.”  And finally we’d tear around and somehow manage to get it cleaned up at the last minute.  The problem is, at my house there are no pre-teenagers yet.

November 165 It really and truly looked that bad.  I just wish you could hear the sound track of Liam crying at the same time.  I kept trying to put him down for a nap but he was up in ten minutes or less every. single. time.

And then David Lee came home a half hour early after a rather frantic call from me.  Ahhhhh.  Two parents.  Liam made a huge mess (again) in his diaper around 5:30 and turned into his normal happy self.

At 8:07 we looked like one of those Rod and Staff stories where the moms are always sweet and perfect and never rushed with their children and (used somewhat sarcastically at our house) “just as they put the vacuum away unexpected company pulls in the drive.”  I even got to read stories to Adam!

November 184 Ahhhh, ever so much better.

                           November 186 November 191 November 190 November 192

A half hour later they all came at once to eat and talk and laugh for a little over an hour and then they all left at once and the house was suddenly very empty and quiet.  I have lots of cake left.  Anyone want to come help me eat leftovers today?

🙂 It’s good to know even the best of us have times like that too. 🙂

Those Rod and Staff stories… my brothers always talked about “going to the study with Father!” 🙂

“Mother sweetly replied”, “As she hung up the sweet smelling towels she hummed to herself”, c’mon…..are they real? I better go take lessons from them. BTW, your food looks lovely!

thanks for the chuckle….. oh  how I despised those “perfect” stories, as if anyone who enjoyed life at all could act like those…. we always chewed the Peter and Rachel stories from Pathway…” Dad did something to Rachel, Rachel did not like what Dad did!”  Cake looks Great… I need some for breakfast!

I’m glad it finally came together for you.  Sometimes that’s how I work best… under pressure.  I’d love to come enjoy some of the food with you.  Looks so yummy even though I have the stomach flu right now. yuck.

Good post! 🙂  and your house is beautiful and your food looks delicious!

Yes indeedy it definitely is a lovely gift from Robert.  BTW, thank you so much for your part in taking pics at our wedding.  We were so happy and thrilled with them!!!  Ya’ll did a beautiful job!

Oh you are too funny. I love it and know exactly how that feels. I howled about a few of the comments… I didn’t grow up with to much Rod and staff but my MIL keeps my kids supplied with them. 🙂 Maybe I need to start on a reality series and see if they would publish them.

Oh, that reminded me so much of myself…so many times!  I think I calmed down a little after I had a baby and realized that my house can’t always be perfectly clean, with the all the baseboard freshly wiped.  Now I just go by the general appearance. (:  Am I slipping or what??):

It’s nice to see that other woman have last minute things going. I’m sure everyone said you’re the perfect hostess. Sometimes I think those perfect stories are just to bring out all the imperfections in ourselves, I don’t think anyone would say they’re that good!

Sounds like us. There were times (when I was pre-teen) when we’d invite guests home for Sunday lunch and as we’d pull in the drive Mom would say, “now everyone needs to find 10 things to put away.” We don’t even have kids at our house now and it still gets messy sometimes. I say a house that stays straightened up all the time is inhabited by people who either are gone all the time or don’t really live. Life is messy. Is that a Richard Scarry book? Love his books!! And I’ll take some cake too. Looks delish!

I love, LOVE your kitchen, and your snack looks amazing, and I’m sure you were a beautiful, gracious hostess.  I also have not-so-vague memories of my mom saying the same thing….”Girls, in less than an hour…!”

Indeed, the snack was delicious, the atmosphere and hostess “Rod and Staff perfect” and then you assured me sweetly “It really wasn’t that much work.” giggle . . . I’m glad to see what went on behind the scenes . . . we loved being there and the cake and all was wonderful!
